GCE Vectrex ROMs

GCE Vectrex Information

Vectrex is a game console of the second generation, developed by General Consumer Electric (GCE), which was subsequently acquired by Milton Bradley Company. A unique feature of the GCE Vectrex was the use of vector graphics monitor, which couldn’t boast of any of the present at that time consoles. The beginning of sales started in 1982 at a starting price of $199. Production and sales were completed in 1984, during the crisis in the industry of video games.

Vectrex games consoles were equipped with its own built-in monitor with vector graphics. Despite the fact that it was black and white, there were special transparent membranes for the screen, which could create the illusion of a color image, as well as protect the eyes from the screen flickering (the screen refresh rate at that time was particularly low).

The release of GCE Vectrex was just before the Christmas holidays, despite the not very low starting price, it was in great demand. The kit included the console, one controller and one originally built in game – Mine Storm. Despite the successful start of sales, console couldn’t compete and was forced to leave the market in 1984 for the reasons mentioned above. In the period before the termination of production of Vectrex its price has already dropped to $50. Also, the rapid withdrawal from the market of gaming consoles was caused by the existence of serious competitors such as: IntelliVision, Atari 2600 and ColecoVision.

Anyway the GCE Vectrex is still alive in the form of emulators. Nowadays you can download for free any GCE Vectrex roms games and play them on your home pc or android tablet.
